Introduction:
Misconceptions about the Kingdom are as old as the promise of the Kingdom.
The Jews believed the Messiah was coming to restore the earthly kingdom of David (cf. Jn. 18:36).
The disciples seem to have been under the same misconception.
- Acts 1:6-7
- 1 Thess. 5:1f
- 2 Thess. 2:1f
Christian writers from as early as the 2nd Century AD expressed Premillennial views.
Cerinthus, who claimed to be a contemporary of the apostle John, we cited by Eusebius as teaching a form of Premillennialism.
Papias (early 2nd Century) expressed Premillennial views.
Nepos (late 2nd Century) as well.
Tertullian, Irenaeus, Justin Martyr, Cyprian, and Lactantius are other prominent figures expressing Premillennial views.
- The Anabaptists of the 17th Century were Premillennialists.
The doctrine remains a prominent feature in the Church of God, Pentecostal, Jehovah’s Witness, Baptist, Mormon, and Adventist denominations, among many others.
Some even refer to “Premillennialist churches of Christ,” though there is no such thing.
